What do writers do when they’re not writing?

Linda Carlson paints and knits, gathers ribbon and family keepsakes, buttons, beads, and vintage ads, and reclaims paper that’s too pretty to discard. The result? Unique cards for a special greeting, to frame or to add to a baby book. For more detail, click on the name of the card style.

Origami Kimonos

Foldeded from floral catalogs, hand-gilded paper, sheet music, concert programs---even crossword puzzles and personals and travel ads! Send one to your favorite gardener or enclose it when you present flowers; write a thank-you to the music teacher or your choir members...perhaps write an apology like "Sorry for my cross words."

Nostalgia

Family keepsakes, old notes, vintage maps and stamps inspire these collages. Some are perfect for weddings and anniversaries; others remind, "Each heart comes home at Christmas" and "Home is a state of mind." Ads from a 1912 British magazine feature "motor cars," Carter's Liver Pills and purveyors to the royal family. The Snippets of History collection offers images and brief histories of Seattle retailers that were childhood favorites of some of us, including Best's Apparel, Rhodes and MacDougall & Southwick.

Knit Wits

Inspired by the vintage yarns long stashed in a Seattle attic, these cards feature tiny hand-knit swatches on miniature "needles" and elf-size garments on "hangers" or strung up with clothes pins. Some are embellished with 1940s tags from Hudson's Bay Company and other long-ago retailers. They are ideal for writing a crafty friend or for accompanying a hand-knit gift. Use one to welcome a new baby or say goodby (“Things will unravel without you”). And of course, you can pun a “get well” message (“Hope those stitches mend in a hurry”) or an apology (“I feel like a nitwit”).

Northwest Novelties

It really doesn't rain here every day, but that's what your faraway friends may think. These note cards feature slickers and umbrellas made from tourist and early twentieth century maps of the Puget Sound area. You can even see the Space Needle in some of them!

Except for the Snippets of History, no two cards are alike. Supplies are very limited; we may have only one of each design in stock. You are welcome to indicate color preferences for the Knit Wits, and which Seattle neighborhood you'd like shown on a slicker. Feel free to ask what Kimonos we have in stock. Or tell us what you plan to do with the cards: we'll do our best to send something very special. You may reach us at info@lindacarlson.com.

Each card is $5 by mail order. Minimum mail order is three. Cards are individually sleeved for protection. Shipping via First Class Mail is included in the price. If you're ordering cards to be sent outside Washington, three cards are $15. For cards sent within the state, add 9.5% for tax; a three-card order is thus $16.43.
